Naturally, he was able to do it because the people at the studio trust him and know that he'll bring them a $20 million film he shot in 33 days…" Tom Stern (cinematographer) Von 1957 bis 1965 markierte die TV-Serie Rawhide einen ersten Karrieresprung für jenen gutaussehenden Mann, der - am 31. Mai 1930 in San Francisco geboren - eben einer schwierigen Jugend in der Depressionsära entwachsen war. Bevor Eastwood als Schauspieler reüssierte, schlug sich der College-Abbrecher als Schwimmlehrer, Holzfäller, Heizer, Tankwart und Lagerarbeiter durchs Leben. Ein erster Vertrag brachte ihm Kleinstrollen in Horrorfilmen. Es folgte das Engagement beim Fernsehen. 1963 wurde ein italienischer Sandalenfilm-Regisseur auf Eastwood aufmerksam und verpflichtete den Amerikaner für eine obskure Low-Budget-Produktion nach Spanien. Der Italiener war Sergio Leone und er drehte mit Für eine Handvoll Dollar einen der ersten Spaghetti-Western, der mit Dreck, Staub, Blut, ungewöhnlicher Musik und einer Menge Zynismus für Abwechslung im damals noch blitzsauberen Western-Genre sorgte. Der erste der Dollar-Filme wurde zum überragenden Erfolg und Eastwoods "Mann ohne Namen" zu einer Ikone der 60er-Jahre. Bereits 1965 folgte Für ein paar Dollar mehr, in dem Eastwood mit zerknautschtem Poncho, einem Zigarillo im Mundwinkel und unbewegtem Gesichtsausdruck Jagd auf Klaus Kinski und seine Kumpane machte. Höhepunkt der Zusammenarbeit von Leone und Eastwood kam dann 1967 mit Zwei glorreiche Halunken, einem Spaghetti-Western der Superlative, in dem der Mann ohne Namen im konfliktträchtigen Verbund mit dem finsteren Lee Van Cleef und dem dauerfluchenden Eli Wallach einer Kiste Gold hinterherjagte. Mittlerweile zum internationalen Superstar geworden kehrte Eastwood Ende der 60er-Jahre in die USA zurück. Hier trat er in diversen Grossproduktionen auf, die ihm allerdings keine Chance zur weiteren Profilierung boten. Das änderte sich 1971, als ihm Don Siegel die Hauptrolle in Dirty Harry anbot. Mit der Figur des wortkargen Cops, der angewidert vom ineffizienten Rechtssystem, das Gesetz in die eigenen Hände nimmt, avancierte Eastwood endgültig zur Hollywoodikone. Allerdings haftete nach dem Auftritt als schiesswütiger Dirty Harry der Ruch, ein waffenverrückter rechtslastiger Anarchist zu sein, wie ein Kainsmal am Jazz-Liebhaber. Gleichwohl liess sich Eastwood nicht beirren und verfolgte mit grosser Insistenz seine Zweitkarriere als Regisseur. 1983 spielte er abermals Police Inspektor Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry kommt zurück. Mittlerweile hatte Eastwood aber genügend Geld beisammen, um nun als Produzent eigene Filme realisieren zu können. Seitdem drehte der Kalifornier ein Meisterwerk um das andere. Seine grosse Stärke ist dabei ungewöhnliche Geschichten aufzugreifen und mit den Mitteln des klassischen Erzählkinos in die Abgründe der menschlichen Natur zu leuchten. Besonders gut gelungen ist ihm das mit dem Oscar-prämierten düsteren Thriller Mystic River wie auch mit dem gleichfalls mit einem Oscar ausgezeichneten Boxer-Drama Million Dollar Baby, in dem der Ex-Haudrauf auf eindringliche Weise die Sterbehilfe zum Thema machte. Ebenfalls kontrovers wurde seine Annäherung an eine der verlustreichsten Schlachten des Zweiten Weltkrieges aufgenommen: Während Regisseur Eastwood in Flags of Our Fathers gnadenlos den US-Helden-Mythos Iwo Jima demontierte, zeigte er im gleichzeitig entstandenen Letters from Iwo Jima die japanische Seite, wo rassistische Verblendung und Militarismus lange Zeit dafür gesorgt hatten, dass das individuelle Leiden der Soldaten unsichtbar geblieben war.
