Der niederländische Kameramann ist vor allem durch seine Arbeit mit Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch und Lars von Trier bekannt. Seine Bildsprache ist in besonderer Weise mit der Avantgarde des zeitgenössischen Films verbunden. Er ist stilistisch nicht festgelegt, sondern entwickelt mit jedem Regisseur zusammen eine neue experimentelle Sicht der Dinge. Die besondere Qualität seiner Arbeit liegt jedoch darin, der Statik des auskomponierten Bildes die Unbeirrbarkeit des naiven Blicks entgegenzusetzen, den Schönheitswillen der Fotografie durch den schwierigen Weg zur Einfachheit zu überwinden und vor allem die Fremdheit des Blicks bei der Annäherung an das fotografierte Objekt zu bewahren. Vom Stilprinzip befreit, ereignen sich so für den Betrachter Momente tiefer, in der Unmittelbarkeit seiner Fotografie begründeter Berührtheit. Für seine Arbeit erhielt er zahlreiche Preise, u.a. den Bundesfilmpreis und den Marburger Kamerapreis. |
