Fotoreporter für Sunday Times * besucht die Guildford School of Art ("…but I dropped out to work as a photographer on Fleet Street.") sowie das Royal College of Art in London (Abschluss 1969) * beginnt seine Karriere als Kameramann für Dokumentar- und Werbefilme * 1979 Kinodebüt mit Breaking Glass * ab 1982/83 dreht ausschließlich amerikanische Produktionen und arbeitet mit führenden Regisseuren (Francis Ford Coppola, Richard Donner, Alan J. Pakula, Mike Nichols) zusammen * 1994-97 filmt zwei Batman-Filme für Joel Schumacher * Ende der 90er Jahre nimmt eine mehrjährige (Kino)auszeit ("film sabbatical") und kehrt 2004 mit Closer zurück * erhält zwei Oscar-Nominierungen für The Prince of Tides and Batman Forever.

"I like to stay with the same group of people if I possibly can because I can rely on them, and there are enough difficulties without dealing with temperament! It’s a much more pleasant experience and we don’t have to talk so much if we know everyone. Frankly, having become used to the great efficiencies of shooting in the U.S., I much prefer it; shooting “Closer” in London was a bit of a shock. Not that it didn’t work out well; it just requires a different way of thinking and planning. I prefer the system of working in the U.S."
