BOOKS

Marilyn Kirk: Jeff Chandler. Bloomington: AuthorHouse, 2003

Raised in a close, loving Jewish immigrant family in the Bronx, New York, Ira Grossel grew up close to his mother, who struggled for the two of them to make ends meet. His family loved him. His grandfather, who had a great influence on him, taught Ira that if he worked hard enough, he could be anything he wanted to be. Ira dreamed of being a film actor, mainly because they made money, and didn’t have to worry about meeting tomorrow’s expenses. Mature for his age, with his steel-colored hair already turning, he excelled in school, as president of the class, on the honor roll, successful in sports and drama class after school. His last year however, he had to divert all his time after school toward helping his mother earn a living through her candy store Operation. Following graduation he worked as a commercial artist for retail catalogues, paying for his classes in the Rockefeller Center Drama School, where he soon became assistant instructor. Leaving with a fellow student, together they founded a successful summer stock company, then at the and of a very successful season closed it up and enlisted in the Army, where Ira became a lieutenant stationed in the Aleutians. Following his discharge he trekked to Hollywood, paid his expenses by going into radio, and soon earned a reputation through his appearances on the Lux Radio Theater and the Eve Arden Show. At Lux he met William Powell, who recommended him to 20th Century Fox, where he was cast in Sword in the Desert. The fans clamored for more of him. As Cochise in Broken Arrow, Ira was nominated for an Academy Award, but even more important, his characterization changed the future movie, portrayals of Indians. Over forty films followed, mostly for Universal Studios, leading to his becoming a top matinee idol of the fifties. At forty-one, not even at the height of his distinguished acting career, Jeff entered Culver City Hospital, where, one month after an operation for a herniated disc, he died. Hollywood was shocked, and demanded an investigation, which revealed cause for a mal-practice lawsuit. The proceeds provided trust funds for his two young daughters, whom he adored. > 596 pages, Paperback / E-Book

Jeff Wells: Jeff Chandler: Film, Record, Radio, Television and Theater Performances. Jefferson: McFarland, 2005

Ruggedly handsome Jeff Chandler won over fans with his versatile acting in film, television, radio, and theatre. He was particularly respected for his roles in Westerns. Chandler got an Oscar nomination in 1950 for Broken Arrow, was involved in the production of 27 box-office champions, and worked with such stars as Orson Welles, Susan Hayward, and James Stewart. First, a biography covers Chandler’s life: his birth in 1918; WWII service; the start of his radio career in 1946; his first film role soon after; and his success as a recording artist, song-writer, and owner of "Chandler Music;" his death in 1961 and the subsequent malpractice suit filed by his family. The work then covers his 54 films from The Invisible Wall (1947) to Merrill’s Marauders (1962). Each chronologically arranged entry provides the studio name, month and year of release, the ad line, alternate titles, running times, format, genre, ratings, cast and crew credits, and a synopsis, plus such information as behind-the-scenes details and additional comments, review extracts, and quotes from Chandler and others about the film. A section on music and spoken word follows, listing all credits and statistics as above, plus program notes and quotes from Chandler. The radio section gives the program and episode name, date, episode number, and credits. The next section lists television appearances with the same information as in the film section. Chandler’s play (The Trojan Horse) with the troupe, dates, number of performances, cast and crew, synopsis and additional comments, is described last. A full bibliography concludes the work, which is illustrated with personal and professional photographs. > photos, notes, bibliography, index, 240pp., softcover
